Common Types of Glasses Repair
While we shouldn’t fix things that aren’t broken, we also can’t fix things if we don’t realize that they’re broken! One of the keys to repair glasses is to know the common problems that can result in a need to make repairs. Here are some of them:
1. Stretched-out hinge.
When this happens, you have a few glasses repair options. You could place a small rubber ring or small rubber band over the hinge. Another option is to use a pair of pliers to bend the hinge back into place. As a word of caution, make sure to place electrical or masking tape over the tips of the pliers. That will help to prevent scratching the frames as you bend back the hinge.
2. Loose, damaged or missing screw.
A pair of eyeglasses can require glasses repair due to problems involving the tiny screws in the frames of the eyeglasses. Typically the screws are either loose, damaged, or missing altogether. If the screw is loose, you can simply use a kit of tiny screwdrivers, to tighten up the screw. Make sure to check whether the screw is either a flat-edge or Phillips-edge type. Also, always avoid forcing the screw if it doesn’t fit into the groove properly, as that could strip the groove.
Another repair glasses problem related to the screws is a screw whose thread is damaged. This problem is often caused by a routine use of the screw, or tightening it too much. You’ll likely need to replace a screw whose thread has been damaged.
And sometimes the screw of a pair of eyeglasses is missing altogether! In that situation, you’ll obviously need to purchase a new screw. You can buy them in packages, allowing you to replace future screws as necessary.
3. Replace nosepieces periodically.
This is a common yet important repair for eyeglasses. Fortunately, you can find kits that include a left and right nosepiece, screws for attaching them, and so on. One of the main problems related to nosepieces is corrosion. So make sure to clean the nosepieces periodically. That will help to extend their lives.
4. Use quick-bonding glue to replace earpieces.
This is yet another common type of glasses repair. After applying the glue, hold the earpieces in place for roughly a minute. That will help to ensure that the bond is as strong as possible.
5. Use industrial-strength glue to attach metal hinges.
If a metal hinge breaks off, take the right steps to repair glasses. First, wash both surfaces completely and remove any excess glue or paint. After applying the glue to the surfaces, hold the pieces into place for about a minute. This will help to ensure that the bond is solid.
6. Replace only a lens or the frame when possible.
This option is much more economical than replacing both the frame and lenses.
